, i wanted to bring in our white house correspondent, dan lothian. dan, is it all about the timing? is it now or never? is it capitalizing on the emotion of this country or is there something else afoot? >> no i do think it is now or never. the white house sees a sense of urgency here in pushing something forward. when you look back over the past several years, when you had these massive shootings, whether it's in connecticut, whether it's in colorado or elsewhere, there's talk in washington about coming up with guidelines to prevent something like that from happening again. then usually it gets lost in the noise of washington there are other pressing issues that come up. in fact we probably would have been talking about fiscal issues had that shooting not happened. they see this as an opportunity to seize the moment. they believe the president is putting forward a comprehensive plan, but it's controversial. a lot of pushback, not only from gun rights groups but some lawmakers up on capitol hill. >>> if you wouldn't mind we minding viewers. there was a lot of talk about the 19 pote

don't think we're -- i don't think we're getting the full truth but i think, like dan was saying, it's almost like a therapy session. as dan knows with tyler when he was writing the book, you don't get the truth the first time you talk to someone. unfortunately for lance, he chose to do this big the way he chooses to do everything. and he's doing it right in front of us. >> it's so interesting. i've been taking a lot of notes on this. he says he never threat end others. he wasn't the kingpin. the idea that he wasn't driving the ship on this just seems, on its face, just false. >> it's patently ridiculous. he absolutely was. he made all the decisions from the equipment to everything else so that includes the doping regimen. >> he called the shots on this? >> tyler hamilton gets a phone call. be on a plane tomorrow. we're going to valencia to do a blood transfusion. that's what happened. >> i want to tell you what he said about his personal operations. >> they said you and the u.s. postal service, cycling team, pulled off the most, his words, sophisticated, professionalized and success

weapons ban through. >> let's head to washington and the white house. dan lothian is there, so dan, is the nra right? >> well, you know, i'm not going to make any predictions about what congress may or may not do. as we have learned over the last few years, what i can say is that assault weapons ban does appear to be facing an uphill effort up on capitol hill and i think what's interesting is that the president, right after the mass shooting in connecticut came out and talked about, you know, putting his support behind efforts to reinstate the assault weapons ban and this had been the position of the white house since then but what was interesting last week when the vice president was rolling out what he said what are the top tier recommendations that he had been getting of meeting with several groups he did not mention that at all so there were questions about whether the white house itself may have felt that it was losing steam and there was not support for this on capitol hill. but shortly thereafter, a spokesman for the white house saying the president and the vice president ar

matter when americans are taken hostage along with others. >> cnn's dan rivers is in london. dan, there are so many different stories going around that the compound was attacked by the algerian military, that some of the hostages escaped, including one american. what are you hearing? >> well, i'm afraid it is a very confusing picture. the latest line we have from the british foreign office here in london confirming that the algerians have told them that there is an ongoing operation at this gas field suggesting that perhaps some sort of effort to go in. we know from the ministry of information in algeria they surrounded the terrorists with the hostages at the gas field, the troops were there. this sounds like they have gone in. there were widespread reports that helicopters were being used to attack the terrorist positions. now, the algerian foreign minister is clear on that saying the use of helicopters is wrong, it's a fantasy was their quote on that. in terms of the number of people that are being held hostage, we don't really have a clear idea, i'm afraid. the initial reports
